Resumo: Recently Prof. Sergiy Kyrylenko got interested in the development of technologies to obtain cellulose fibers, pure cellulose and cellulose nanocrystals from non-wood plants, such as industrial hemp and flax. As his basic training is in molecular and cellular biology, he is well positioned to develop biological ways of processing plant fibers using enzymes. We have already conducted an initial pilot experiment to digest hemp biomass with various enzymes and currently we are investigating the obtained fibers. We believe that with the development of the specialized enzymes to specifically digest lignin, pectin and hemicellulose it would be also possible to extract cellulose e.g. from bagasse of the sugar cane.
